At Mac's ur ging, Norma tried to reason with P aul, but he insists th at he loves Barbara and lau ghs her off . Barba ra is equally disda inful of her an d agrees to meet Paul for dinner that night at h is apartment. Norma& #39;s husband Stephen Lawry i s a scientist leaving that night on a trip to t est a secret invention on which he has been working for the government a nd the war effort. Worried about Ba rbara, she uses a pretext not to accompany Stephen and goes to the apart ment. When Barbara arrives, she finds Paul ' ;s dead body and think s tha t Norma has killed him, even though Norma i nsists that he was dead whe n she arri ved. B arbara threatens to call th e police unless she leaves Stephen. Fearing that a scandal will hurt him, Norma agrees. No rma then turns to Mac, who goes to Paul's a partment with Friday and Marty, only to find the body and the rug under it missing. A man arrives to replace the rug and Mac hides in a c loset, overhearing a telephon e call t o Norma's number from "Ga briel&q uot; to "Vera." Mac accidentall y gives h imself away , but wi th Fr iday's help overpowers Gabriel, who r efuses to talk. Mac h as Marty hide hi m to keep h im under wraps. Norm a returns to her country h ome unexpectedly , which discourag es an esp ionage ri ng that includes her b utler, Hansen, from breaki ng into Ste phen' ;s safe and stealing his pla ns. They have killed Gerente, who was also an agen t, and hid den t he body. Mac arrives with Friday at Norma' ;s house an d pretends to be her curmudgeonly "Uncle Mac&qu ot; who has come for a v isit. His blind ness lulls any s uspicions Hansen might have about him. Shor tly therea fter, Ba rbara comes home from an &quo t;emerg ency reh earsal";, cal led to get her out of the house by her director, Cheli Sco tt, who inveigles an invitatio n to spen d the night at the Lawry home. Unknown to Barbara and N orma, Cheli is the ri ngleader of th e spies. C heli ordered Paul killed because h is aff ection for Barbara was beginning to li mit hi s effectiveness, and she immediately suspects Mac is not what he seems. Gabriel9;s wife Ver a, the La wrys9; maid, i s als o a part of th e plot . When Gabrie l doe s not return ho me, Ver a becomes hyster ical with wo rry. Mac secretly asks Ver a to meet him in the greenh ouse, using her worry about Gabriel as a lure. She is observed b y the others, however, an d is killed by Hansen bef ore she can rea ch Mac. The spies cut the house's telephone wires so that Mac and No rma cannot call the police, a nd Che li has Mac lock ed up under guard. Using his blindness as a distraction, Mac overpowers hi s guard and releases Friday out a windo w with instr uctions to &quo t;go home and get Marty.&q uot; Stephen arrives home and Chel i threat ens his family if he does not give her the final st ep in creating his invention, which was not in the safe. Barbara fina lly r ealizes how muc h Norma actu ally cares for her . Mac tries to stall for time, but is locked in the cellar. When Hansen goes t o kil l him, Mac has broken the light bulb and his advantage of to tal darkness helps him overcome the spy. Marty and Fri day return with th e police . When Fr iday is spotted by a lookout, Mac overpow ers hi m and is saved from being shot by another lookout by Frida y.
